Workshops for
February, 2004

Wild Goose Qi Gong   (2/3)
Qi Gong (sometimes spelled "Chi Kung") is a choreographed set of Chinese exercises designed to improve our overall health and well-being. Based on the flowing and graceful movements of geese, it uses stretching and other techniques to open the acupuncture meridians and increase our vitality and energy. Qi Gong participants enjoy a greater range of motion, improved balance, reduced mental stress and a feeling of rejuvenation. Led by Louis Knox. $5 fee. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Tai Chi Chuan   (2/3)
Tai Chi is a choreographed set of martial art postures that are designed to increase your power and agility by using your inner energy. Like Qi Gong, Tai Chi helps improve your range of motion and lung capacity, and it places a special emphasis on balance. Practitioners often enjoy reduced stress and a feeling of well-being. If you are interested, some time will also be spent learning simple self-defense techniques. Led by Louis Knox. $36 for 6 weeks. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Tour of Meditation Practices   (2/3)
Hundreds of approaches to relaxation/centering/meditation have been developed over the centuries, and each has its own charm, benefits and wisdom. We explore one new approach each meeting. This lets you work some relaxation into your life while building a repertoire of stress-management techniques for improving your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Free. (Return to calendar)

Reiki Exchange   (2/3)
Within each one of us there is the capacity to energetically heal the imbalances of the mind, body and spirit. Participate in a group where novices and others can discuss, learn and practice energy healing together. Raachaele Williams, Christine McNew and Brad Tessieri lead this experiential practice and support group. This is not designed to be an alternative to regular health care professionals. Free. (Return to calendar)

Feldenkrais Movement For Life   (2/4)
Many of us don't run, dance, or even stand up from a chair with as much ease and grace as we would like. But these movements of everyday life don't need to be difficult. The Feldenkrais Method shows us how to move in ways that are natural. This class series will teach us how to recognize our physical sensations and become more comfortable, relaxed and graceful. We will develop the skills to better care for ourselves and keep ourselves out of pain, enabling us to move toward the realization of our goals. Presented by Elaine Dove, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner. For more information, visit www.HumanPotentialCenter.org or call Elaine at 470-4268. $80 for eight-week series. $12.50 single class. Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available for some professionals. Please RSVP to 470-4268. (Return to calendar)

Sexuality: A Touchy Subject   (2/5)
Most people have very few chances to hear frank talk from the opposite sex on what they honestly feel and believe about sex and sensuality. You too? Well, here's your chance! Come learn what men and women really feel about the touchy subject of sexuality in a lively, facilitated group discussion. Free. (Return to calendar)

Birthday Bash   (2/6)
[Potluck Party for Gordon Placette, Sterling Carroll, Lia Nelson, Jo Lagattuta.] We celebrate members' birthdays with a delectable potluck followed by birthday cake and games that are perfect triggers for unbridled group creativity! If you enjoy sparkling wit, an easygoing atmosphere and delightful food, don't miss this one! Don't forget to bring some food for the potluck! Free for members. Please RSVP. (MEMBERS ONLY.) (Return to calendar)

Video and Discussion   (2/7)
["How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" with Kate Hudson [PG-13].] Most Saturday nights, you'll find us watching a popular movie here at the Center in a fun, informal atmosphere. Then we have a discussion. We don't discuss the movie, though; we discuss personal growth issues and themes that came up in the movie. So we're not doing a "Siskel and Ebert" type of review, but rather an in-depth personal growth process that helps us get to know ourselves and each other better. During the discussion we learn and practice essential communication skills like I-Statements and Open-Ended Questions, so that we can apply them more effectively in the rest of our lives. Each month there's a different general topic for the videos, ranging from Relationships to Overcoming Obstacles to Remarkable People. Come join us! Free. (Return to calendar)

Board Meeting   (2/8)
As a nonprofit, the Board of Directors establishes our mission and goals, and develops policies and procedures to help us move effectively in that direction. Our Board meetings are open to the public; feel free to come and share your energy and ideas to help us tap the creativity, love and playfulness of the human spirit. No charge. (Return to calendar)

Chitchat & Chow   (2/10)
[Discussion Topic: Careers at Black-eyed Pea Restaurant, 3909 S. Lamar.] Tackle a personal growth topic with a lively group of thinkers while savoring a new cuisine at one of Austin's many fascinating restaurants. Advanced Healing Energy Exchange   (2/10)
Many Eastern and Western spiritual and healing traditions include a belief in "healing energy." All types of energy work will be discussed except for Reiki (the Center already provides a workshop dedicated to Reiki). No charge. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Improvisational Art   (2/11)
Sometimes art is just too thought out. As artists, we have a tendency to get caught up in the details, thinking too much or agonizing too long over a subject. This can stifle our freshest creative impulses. In this one night workshop you will experience a technique that will free up your mind and your brush, allowing your inner Picasso to shine through. You might even surprise yourself! Led by local artist Leslie Harvey. $25 (supplies included). $15 for members. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Valentine's Day Self-Love Celebration   (2/12)
On Valentine's Day, we often overlook our most important relationship: our relationship with ourselves. In this workshop, we'll use a guided-imagery exercise to explore how much we unconditionally accept ourselves. Then using what we learned, we'll craft a Valentine's Day card for ourselves which we design specifically to remind us of self-love. Presented by Robert McGarey, M.A. Free. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Sacred Tribal Drum Circle   (2/13)
The Native-American drum is not just a musical instrument, it is a tool for the transformation of consciousness. This class teaches you how to use sound and rhythm for creative expression. In the process, you'll learn that sound and rhythm are also healing modalities that engage drummers on a deep emotional level, producing profound beneficial effects on your body and mind. Bring a drum and/or rattle if you have one, and a prayer or spiritual song. Presented by Frank Del Toro. $20 fee. $15 for members. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Growth Report   (2/22)
[Featuring Christine Mcnew.] Personal growth is not a one-person job. At the Center, we believe that the support of a community of like-minded people is a potent ingredient for exploring and understanding ourselves. That's why we offer you (as a member) a chance every year or so to share where you are right now on your personal growth journey. Many of our members say that having a small group of eight or ten people validating and supporting them for around two hours was one of the most powerful experiences they've had in a long time. We'll give you some questions you can use as a starting point, and you can improvise and embellish from there. (Like everything else here at the Center, the Growth Report is optional. However, we recommend it highly!) Free for members. Please RSVP. (MEMBERS ONLY.) (Return to calendar)
