Workshops for
March, 2010

Being Creative Again Group   (3/1 from 1 - 3 pm)
Far too often, the creative projects that we've been planning to work on get shoved aside in favor of more "practical" things. Problem is, that means our creative pursuits are never a priority, so we never have a chance to express the beauty inside that's waiting to get out. Well, you know how it's easier to exercise when you have an exercise buddy? In this group, we serve as creativity buddies for each other, calling each other up to make sure we attend and work on our creative projects. Invitation only. Free. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

STD's: Empower Yourself   (3/1 from 7 - 8:30 pm)
There's a lot of misinformation out there about herpes, HPV, Hepatitis, chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases. Cynthia Brown from Planned Parenthood will be the guest speaker with lots of reliable information about symptoms, modes of transmission, incubation periods, what kind of protection condoms and other barriers can offer, how to be safe, and so on. Free. (Return to calendar)

Tour of Meditation Practices   (3/2 from 6:15 - 7 pm)
Hundreds of approaches to relaxation/centering/meditation have been developed over the centuries, and each has its own charm, benefits and wisdom. We explore one new approach each meeting. This lets you work some relaxation into your life while building a repertoire of stress-management techniques for improving your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Ages 12 and up. Free. (Return to calendar)

Building Sound Self-Esteem   (3/3 from 7 - 10 pm)
How we feel about ourselves impacts every part of our lives: our romantic relationships, our career, our finances, our family life. It determines our satisfaction with life and our psychological health and resiliency. This four-week workshop teaches you how to cope with difficult situations, dispel unnecessary feelings of guilt, and improve your relationships through boosting your self-confidence and building sound self-esteem. Presented by Robert McGarey, M.A. $175 for four-weeks (includes CD and a 40-page workbook). $150 for members. Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available for some professionals. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Video and Discussion   (3/6 from 7 pm - Midnight)
["The Invention of Lying" with Ricky Gervais [PG-13].] Most Saturday nights, you'll find us watching a popular movie here at the Center in a fun, informal atmosphere. Then we have a discussion. We don't discuss the movie, though; we discuss personal growth issues and themes that came up in the movie. So we're not doing a "Siskel and Ebert" type of review, but rather an in-depth personal growth process that helps us get to know ourselves and each other better. During the discussion we learn and practice essential communication skills like I-Statements and Open-Ended Questions, so that we can apply them more effectively in the rest of our lives. Each month there's a different general topic for the videos, ranging from Relationships to Overcoming Obstacles to Remarkable People. Come join us! Ages 18 and up. Free. (Return to calendar)

Practice Your Personal Growth Potluck   (3/7 from 1 - 3 pm)
[Springtime Salads.] After attending all those workshops on communication and personal growth, where do you go to practice the skills you've learned? How about a potluck? Believe me, talking about the best way to barbecue the chicken (or set the table or arrange the centerpiece) is a very different experience here at the Center--where people try to communicate with assertiveness and love--than it is in the not-so-functional families many of us grew up in. The informal atmosphere helps us get to know each other in a candid way and practice our new communication skills on people who are more likely to encourage than to criticize. Free, but don't forget to bring something yummy to share! Please RSVP. (MEMBERS ONLY.) (Return to calendar)

Shabby Chic Cleanup   (3/7 from 3 - 6 pm)
Come tickle your creative sensibilities by helping us spruce up the interior of the Center, to make it feel more inviting and exciting to spend time in! You can help create the kind of comfortable, professional ambience that encourages people to learn more about themselves and each other. We're aiming to create a "shabby chic" atmosphere in three steps: Sort, Organize and then Decorate. Coordinated by Leslie Harvey. Free. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

Being Creative Again Group   (3/8 from 1 - 3 pm)
Far too often, the creative projects that we've been planning to work on get shoved aside in favor of more "practical" things. Well, you know how it's easier to exercise when you have an exercise buddy? In this group, we serve as creativity buddies for each other, calling each other up to make sure we attend and work on our creative projects. Invitation only. Free. Please RSVP to request an invitation. (Return to calendar)

Chitchat & Chow   (3/9 from 11:45 am - 1 pm)
[Discussion Topic: Personal Growth at La Feria, 1816 S. Lamar.] Tackle a personal growth topic with a lively group of thinkers while savoring a new cuisine at one of Austin's many fascinating restaurants. Topics range from Money to Creativity to Careers to Spiritual Growth. Ages 18 and up. Free (except for cost of meal). (Return to calendar)

Strategic Planning Group   (3/10 from 7 - 9 pm)
Our aim is to create emotionally-healthy community, and that means everybody gets a voice in the kind of personal-growth events we offer here! Come and get involved in planning ways to help the Center thrive and more effectively help everyone grow. Maybe there are some classes or activities you've been craving! Or something you'd like to see the Center do, or do more effectively. This is your chance to help build a better Center! Free for members. Please RSVP. (MEMBERS ONLY.) (Return to calendar)

Growth Report   (3/26 from 7 - 9 pm)
[Featuring Bob.] Personal growth is not a one-person job. At the Center, we believe that the support of a community of like-minded people is a potent ingredient for exploring and understanding ourselves. That's why we offer you (as a member) a chance every year or so to share where you are right now on your personal growth journey. Many of our members say that having a small group of eight or ten people validating and supporting them for around two hours was one of the most powerful experiences they've had in a long time. We'll give you some questions you can use as a starting point, and you can improvise and embellish from there. (Like everything else here at the Center, the Growth Report is optional. However, we recommend it highly!) Free for members. Please RSVP. (MEMBERS ONLY.) (Return to calendar)
