Tour of Meditation Practices   (10/3)
Hundreds of approaches to relaxation/centering/meditation have been developed over the centuries, and each has its own charm, benefits and wisdom. We explore one new approach each meeting. This lets you work some relaxation into your life while building a repertoire of stress-management techniques for improving your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Ages 12 and up. Tai Chi/Qigong   (10/5)
Tai Chi is a choreographed set of martial art postures that are designed to increase your power and agility by using your inner energy. Like Qi Gong, Tai Chi helps improve your range of motion and lung capacity, and it places a special emphasis on balance. Practitioners often enjoy reduced stress and a feeling of well-being. If you are interested, some time will also be spent learning simple self-defense techniques. Led by Louis Knox. Ages 12 and up. $36 for 6 weeks or $8 per class (the first class is free). Medicinal Yoga for Back Pain   (10/7)
Millions of Americans suffer from back pain due to poor posture, aging, structural damage or their stressful, mostly-sedentary modern lifestyle. In addition, many people find that mental and emotional stress quickly translates into physical problems like back pain or other ailments. Yoga not only provides relief from your back pain, it can actually prevent it through correcting your posture, regular exercise and stress management. Video and Discussion   (10/7)
["Cape of Good Hope" with Debbie Brown [PG-13].] Most Saturday nights, you'll find us watching a popular movie here at the Center in a fun, informal atmosphere. Then we have a discussion. We don't discuss the movie, though; we discuss personal growth issues and themes that came up in the movie. So we're not doing a "Siskel and Ebert" type of review, but rather an in-depth personal growth process that helps us get to know ourselves and each other better. During the discussion we learn and practice essential communication skills like I-Statements and Open-Ended Questions, so that we can apply them more effectively in the rest of our lives. Each month there's a different general topic for the videos, ranging from Relationships to Overcoming Obstacles to Remarkable People. Come join us! Ages 18 and up. Free. (Return to calendar)
 
Chitchat & Chow   (10/10)
[Discussion Topic: Spiritual Growth at Madam Mam's Thai Restaurant, 4514 Westgate Blvd..] Tackle a personal growth topic with a lively group of thinkers while savoring a new cuisine at one of Austin's many fascinating restaurants. Improvisational Art   (10/11)
Regardless of whether you're a novice or an artist in full bloom, you may find yourself overwhelmed by all the possibilities and "the rules," or underwhelmed by a lack of ideas. Painter's Block can stifle your freshest creative impulses, or even cause you to stop creating altogether. In this one night workshop you will experience a technique that will free up your mind and your brush, allowing your fresh inner creator to shine through. In an effort to improve the peaceful conditions in the world, we host a monthly quiet meditation, where all beliefs and religious traditions are honored. Reiki Exchange   (10/17)
Within each one of us there is the capacity to energetically heal the imbalances of the mind, body and spirit. Participate in a group where novices and others can discuss, learn and practice energy healing together. Oceanna leads this experiential practice and support group. Twice a year, we take a break from our often technologically-oriented lives to revel in the simple joys of nature at one of Texas' delightful state parks. These weekend-long retreats provide ample time for soaking in the natural beauty as well as for connecting with the other members who attend.
