For the first time ever, Dr. Gladys McGarey -- often called the "Mother of Holistic Medicine" -- will speak in a major conference alongside two of her grown children. Her two children are accomplished holistic professionals in their own right: Analea McGarey, RPT, is the author of Dr. Gladys' biography, Born to Heal and Robert McGarey, M.A., is the founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit Human Potential Center in Austin, Texas. The conference is being held in celebration of The Human Potential Center's 20th anniversary year.
Dr. Gladys, as she is known to her patients and friends, is a founder and past President of the American Holistic Medical Association. She holds a conventional medical license -- M.D. -- , and she is also a licensed Homeopathic Medical Doctor -- M.D.(H). Because of her holistic approach to the practice of medicine beginning in the early 1950's and her ground-breaking work with Edgar Cayce's medical readings, she has been dubbed the "Mother of Holistic Medicine." Last year, at the age of 84, she traveled to war-torn Afghanistan and India to help implement an international holistic medical project in those developing countries.
At the conference, Dr. Gladys will present "The Physician Within You," which is also the title of one of her books. In addition, she will speak on "Faith, Spirit and the Art of Healing" and "The New Holistic Vision: Living Medicine in a Living World." Later in the conference she will present a slide show of last year's work in Afghanistan and India, and engage in a panel discussion with her two kids. During the conference, her son Robert will lecture on "Human Potential in the 21st Century," and her daughter Analea will present a workshop entitled "My Body, My Beloved." You can also view the complete schedule here.
In her lectures, Dr. Gladys shares the guiding philosophy of her 50-year medical practice. She uses the real-life stories of her patients to dramatically illustrate the potential of this wise and humane approach to medical care, and provides a glimpse of the future of medicine. By taking responsibility for our own health, accepting full partnership with our physicians, and being open to alternative healing modalities, Dr. Gladys shows us how we can access our own inner healer -- the natural healing process inherent in every human being -- and live a fuller, more meaningful life.
The conference will be held at the Red Lion Hotel, 6121 North I-35 at Highway 290 in Austin. Here's a map to help you get there. And we've also got a list of other nearby hotels and/or Bed and Breakfasts.
If you know of a group or organization that is interested in holistic health, you might want to look over our co-sponsorship and fundraising options.
We also have a limited number of opportunities available for volunteers.
