This Art Space might be Perfect for You

This is a great location for letting your creativity flow like never before. But that's not all. It is also a unique location since it is paired with the chance to build deep, lasting connections with other fascinating people. That's because your $225 monthly rent includes membership in The Human Potential Center, our small, humanistically-oriented south-Austin community.

The Human Potential Center is a 40-year-old non-profit organization whose purpose is to spark the creativity, love and playfulness of the human spirit. (See HumanPotentialCenter.org). As a member of the Center, you will be joining in with the creative spirit and sense of community here.

The Details

Rent is $225 per month with a one-year lease. First and last month's rent is payable upon signing the lease. There is also a $200 security and damage deposit due upon signing. We require a background check and ask the potential renter to share half of the cost (your part is $25). We run the background check after we tentatively approve you as a renter, so there is no fee until you are tentatively approved.

Membership

Renters are expected to maintain an active membership in The Human Potential Center, since one of our goals as a nonprofit is to create a more thriving, emotionally-healthy spirit of community on The Human Potential Campus. You're not just renting space; you're also choosing to join this community. In practice, that means that we require renters to attend at least one Center event every month, and to work three hours or more each month to improve the Center community, such as gardening, leading a workshop, building a trellis, distributing workshop calendars and brochures, etc.

Human Potential Center members gain access to many benefits including workshops, classes and other tools that help you improve your life and strengthen your communication skills and relationships. (Here's more information about membership options.)

You also get reduced prices for many of the workshops we present, such as "How to be Assertive and Loving Too," "Building Sound Self-Esteem" and "Getting Un-Stuck." And the most important benefit of membership is the chance to "spark the creativity, love and playfulness of the human spirit" by actively participating in building emotionally-healthy community.

That's not "community" in the sense of people living in the same geographic location, though some members do live on site. Rather, emotionally-healthy community is something we create when we connect with each other in healthy ways, either at Center events or off-campus. It's not something the Center provides for you; it's something we each nurture by sharing with each other the challenges and delights of our individual heroic journeys through life.

Using honest, loving communication we aim to create an environment that's genuine, open and affirming. Like every community, ours is not a finely-polished end product but rather an ongoing work in progress, and your active, loving involvement makes a difference. We are looking for renters who are in alignment with these goals.

Thus, we ask that renters actively engage in the life of the Center and do your part to build connections that help support the other members in their personal and spiritual growth. In the process, you'll be nurturing the connections that support you in return.

Because being part of an emotionally healthy community is a unique experience, we recognize that it may be difficult to know, in advance, how that will feel. As a result, we include in the first one-year lease a 6-month "getting to know each other" period where either of us can decide, without penalty, if it's not a good fit and give the other party a 30-day notice.

The Process

We are only looking for people who have done a lot of personal-growth work and are genuinely committed to building emotionally-healthy community through playful psychological, emotional and interpersonal exploration and growth.

If this describes you, please complete and submit a rental application and the "Why Are You Interested?" sheet. We'll read it over and if it seems like you might fit in well at the Center, we'll arrange a time for you to meet some of our current members and get a feel for who we are and what being at the Center would feel like.

We make decisions about new community members by consensus, so after we've had a chance to meet each other, if you feel like there's a good connection and we do too, the next step is for you to meet with the others who are renting space on campus and get their support for your application. Then we'll run the background check and if all goes well, we'll sign the lease agreement and arrange your move-in date!
